KYIV NEWS

Easter in Ukraine is celebrated this year on April 15th.

The Easter Egg in Ukrainian is called Krashanka or Pysanka. The former are dyed a single colour with vegetable dyes, or with an onion to achieve that specific dark brown colour, blessed and eaten at Easter. The latter have been decorated with traditional folk designs using beeswax for centuries, and are thought to hold magical powers to ward off evil spirits, guarantee a good harvest and bring you good luck! Ukrainian Easter Bread is called Paskha, and is not to be confused with the Russian Kulich! Although these are more or less the same thing, Ukrainians don’t always know what a Kulich is. For Ukrainians, regardless of whether they follow Lent or not, meat dishes and especially salo taste much better at Easter.

At Easter, people greet each other by saying, “Khrystos Voskres!” (Christ has risen!). Should you be addressed in such a way come Easter Sunday, make sure your answer is “Voistynu Voskres” (He truly has!). Most Ukrainians will have attended at least one all-night Easter service in their lives. The biggest and best takes place at the Volodymyrskiy Cathedral. From there, a priest carrying the cross leads a procession through the city, (but, to be honest, most people don’t really know why they do this). Easter Bunny? What’s that? Ukrainians don’t know much about this furry little creature! The competitive spirit is ignited at Easter with egg tapping wars called Khrystovanya held in almost every home in the country. Easter is the holiest holiday for Ukrainians. It is a time to be kind and respectful, if for only one day! Ukrainians love to have their possessions blessed. This Easter, you will no doubt see many standing near churches with baskets full of food, vodka, wine and anything else that might require purifying, such as their new iPhone! Easter, or Paskha (like the bread) in Ukrainian, is a family holiday, which means people will gather at home to celebrate. Some may even head out to start the picnic season.

I would like to thank you so much for providing me with the necessary help for my travel to Kiev.

I would say this was the best trip ever to Ukraine. No surprise at all, everyone was on time. From the beginning everything were perfect. Driver was on time, friendly, reliable and trustworthy. He was with a clear sign when I exited from customs area. Car was clean and suite. He also saved us a lot of time as we got to the apartment in 30 min. He carried our bags, showed how everything worked in the apartment.

Apartment was safe, cute and homey and furnished with everything we needed. The location is perfect, in the most city center near the metro, so it was secure to walk to and from all locations at night. Besides it was in 5-10 min walk from the office. Staff was really friendly and helpful, and spoke English very well. They actually have a manager in each language: Spanish, German, French, Italian. We got a quick answers to all our questions. One of managers (name) showed us all around, took us to purchase some food and responded all our needs.

Also I want to thanks so much to assist us in getting to booking office to buy train tickets. That is something that we will never forget. I had a fantastic time and the service provided by UARent was excellent. I would really recommend your company to my friends. I was sad to leave Kiev but shall return soon and will be again seeking services from UARent! Best

Regards, Benjamin George Jr

>> March 8 Woman's Day. Spring, Flowers, Romance or How it All Started.

Four days in the beginning of March Ukrainians will be celebrating International Women' Day. This holiday originates from woman's antiwar and suffrage movement. It was first observed in the USA nationwide in 1909 and got an international status a year later. The first known date selected for Woman's Day observance was February, 23. That was when Russian women went on antiwar strike, followed by Russian revolution breakout and Russian women rights granting. This date later was shifted to a later date of March, 8 according to New Style Calendar.

However March, 8 started off as a working women solidarity day in their struggle for equal rights and emancipation, nowadays its meaning has a wide interpretation through different countries. In Ukraine, as in other former Soviet republics, Women's Day has a patriarchal shape with an emphasis put on celebration of a woman as a mother and wife, mistress and beauty. From March, 8 till March, 11 Ukrainians will be celebrating a holiday of spring and femininity. It is a common practice to greet girls and women on Woman's Day, give them signs of attention like flowers and gifts, arrange parties for them, spare them from any work and express appreciation of them in other ways. Get tuned into Ukrainian holiday of spring and beauty and make this day unforgettable for the women you care for!

>> I stayed in one of UARent apartments this winter and was quite pleased with the service. My flight was almost two hours late and I was really glad to see the driver waiting for me just the place as we agreed. He had a sign with my name too, so it was easy to find him. The apartment was almost in Kreschatyk street, the entrance was sufficiently lit. There was no elevator in the building, but it was not a problem as long as the driver gave me a hand carrying my big suitcase upstairs.

The apartment was clean, warm and cozy. I did not quite pay attention when the guy showed how to turn the TV on. A bit odd way to change channels. But there was a manual in the apartment so I could do it myself. Also there was a map of my location with marked places of interest. Internet worked at once for me. The apartment was kept clean during my stay, I had towels changed and trash taken out. Comfortable bed, utilities work fine, quiet location, plenty of utensils. Staff was friendly and professional. I will definitely use their service again. Frederick Hagemann, Brugge

>> Mayor of Kyiv: preparations for Euro 2012 are accordinlgy to the plan and not worse than London's for 2012 Olympics "Speaking about our progress in preparations to Euro 2012, we can say that we are not doing any worse. On the contrary, our delegation found our stadium in Kyiv even better and more interesting than the stadium we saw there," the mayor of Kyiv Mr.Popov said during a press conference on the results of his visit to London. Mayor stated that Kyiv appreciates London's experience in preparations for the summer 2012 Olympic Games and its organization of supporters' security. Popov added that during the visit to London the Ukrainian delegation met with public organizations of English football fans.

"We informed them about the way in which we are going to host them, organize their leisure, and their opportunities of accommodation. It seems that English fans are positive about a possibility to see Ukraine and watch their team's games," he said. A delegation from the Ukrainian government headed by Ukrainian Vice Premier and Infrastructure Minister Borys Kolesnikov has met with London Mayor Boris Johnson. The Ukrainian delegation included Head of Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy, and Donetsk Mayor Oleksandr Lukyanchenko.

>> In light of the upcoming UEFA European Football Championship taking place in Poland and the Ukraine this summer, local hotel inventory is expected to increase by 9.4 percent in Wroclaw, Poland, 8.7 percent in Kiev, Ukraine, and 1.7 percent in Warsaw, Poland, compared to the previous year. The daily room inventory of the hotel cities will stay below that of the past host cities such as Amsterdam, Vienna, Brussels, Belgium, and Lisbon, Portugal. "The limited supply increase, the media coverage of the event and the hospitality experienced by the teams and the supporters should benefit the host cities", commented Elizabeth Randall, managing director of STR Global.

"This is highlighted in our latest forecast for Warsaw, predicting occupancy to reach 80.1 percent in June 2012 compared to 77.7 percent the previous year, and average daily rate to reach PLN 350.41". It is hardly predict prices on rent in Kiev during EURO 2012 though. Ukrainian officials say hosting cities including Kiev are able to provide enough lodging capacities.
