Some operators might not speak English though. If you have someone speaking local language just ask him to order a taxi for you. You may also ask the staff at the place you attend to do that for you. Operator would tell you right away the amount of money you have to pay to the driver. Minimum fare would be 30-35 UAH and up to 100 UAH if you go within the city. It is safe to walk in the street during the night. But as in every country you need to be attentive. This isn't really a warning or a danger but it is something to be mindful of. It is still generally safer in Kiev than in most foreign cities. Violent crime in Kiev is seldom. Most crimes in Kiev involve pettiness such as pick-pocketing and money scams. Precautions include not flaunting valuables while on Kiev streets, watching your pockets in crowded places or walking alone at night through city streets or parks.

Do I have to carry my passport with me when I am in the street?

You need to carry passport with you when you are in the street. Police have the authority to stop people and request their documents. Due to the possibility of random document checks by police, foreign citizens should carry their passports, registered migration cards, and visas with them or at least the copy of the documents. If you do not have your documents with you they can take you to police station and keep there up to 72 hours to identify you. Foreigners are often stopped for so called “document check”. Police would easy let you go if you do not have any documents and will bribe them.
